OLUSEGUN AKINOLA | 7TH DAN | 8 TIMES NATIONAL CHAMPION | WORLD REFEREE

Sensei Olusegun Akinola was born in Lagos Nigeria to the family of Brigadier-General and Mrs S.B Akinola. His father was a former Director of Military Intelligence and his mother a retired principal.


Olusegun Akinola is the Vice Principal Pastoral and Head of Boarding at The Regent Secondary School in Abuja, one of Nigeria's leading Secondary Schools. He is also a teacher of Art & Design and an accredited Coursework Assessor with the Cambridge International Examinations. He has a Higher National Diploma in Fine Art from the Yaba College of Technology and a Master of Arts Degree in Fine Art from the University of East London. He holds a diploma in Boarding Education from the Boarding Schools Association, United Kingdom. He is the Award Coordinator of the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award at The Regent Secondary School and was certified as an Adventurous Journey Supervisor and Assessor at High Wycombe, United Kingdom in 2014.


Olusegun Akinola has had many successful Art Exhibitions home and abroad. His work has been exhibited at One Canada Square Canary Wharf London, Mydrim Gallery, Terra Kulture, Signature Gallery, National Museum of Monuments Lagos. and Shell Port-Harcourt. He has a passion for painting in watercolour and oil.


Segun, as he is popularly called, is undoubtedly the best all-round karate-ka Nigeria has produced. He was awarded 7th-degree black belt (2019) by the Karate Union of Great Britain. He got his 5th dan (2000) and 4th dan (1995) with Sensei Enoeda (9th dan), head of the Japan Karate Association in Europe.


He started karate over 30 years ago with Dipo Oyemaja at The All Saints Church Yaba and later became a student of the legendary instructor; Alfred Ohimain in 1986. Segun also trained with Sensei Goby Shina who is the head of the SKI association in Nigeria. Segun was 8 times National Champion and former Captain and Coach of the Nigerian National team. His competition and coaching career took him to countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America and Latin America, winning many medals for the country. He was gold medallist at the International Shotokan Karate Federation Goodwill Games in Philadelphia, U.S.A, in 2001. Sensei Akinola has a wealth of experience teaching adults and children. He was a karate instructor at the American International School of Lagos for 20 years. He is currently a guest instructor with the Shotokan Karate England (SKE) and teaches at SKE clubs in London. He also coaches the SKE competition squad. He taught karate during PE lessons at the Edmonton County Upper School during the 2008/2009 winter term and was a substitute self-defence instructor at the Walthamstow School for Girls in 2009.


He is a World Karate Federation Kata Judge “A”, an accolade he achieved in Tokyo, Japan. (The WKF is the only organisation recognised by the International Olympic Committee). Sensei Akinola is a well sought after instructor who gives courses to national teams.


Olusegun Akinola was appointed the Secretary-General of the Referees Commission for the African Karate Federation after the African Championships in Cameroon, 2017. He has continued to represent Nigeria on the International Karate circuit.


A man of many talents, Olusegun Akinola is an advanced skier and has led The Regent Secondary School to 6 Ski & Educational Trips to Austria, Italy, France and Switzerland. His other hobbies are playing the piano, singing and photography. Sensei Akinola is married with children.
